Dry spell for reservoirs

Reservoirs in Yorkshire are showing the first signs of depletion after the dry start to the summer continues through June.

Scammonden Reservoir, near Huddersfield, above, is down to 70 per cent of its normal level after lower-than-average rainfall over the past three months – but Yorkshire Water said there is no need for concern.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "We would like to reassure customers that despite lower than average rainfall in April and May, and a dry start to June, the water supply situation in Yorkshire is okay, with regional stocks of water in our reservoirs at 75 per cent.

"In Yorkshire we take water from a number of sources, including groundwater and rivers. So when customers see a reservoir looking lower, this doesn't necessarily mean there is anything to worry about."
