Duchess lends support to hospices

THE Duchess of Cambridge has given her first video message to appeal for support for a campaign for children’s hospices.

In the message, aired for the first time yesterday, the Duchess urged people to support Children’s Hospice Week.

Kate, who is royal patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, said she had seen first-hand the “transformational” work done for children and their families. She said: “There are 49 children’s hospice services across the UK, all providing similar invaluable and life enhancing care to thousands of families.

“Children’s Hospice Week is a time to recognise, celebrate and support the inspirational work of those hospices, and those who provide palliative care to these children and families.”

Her message was welcomed by Claire Rintoul, chief executive of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Rotherham, who said: “It costs over £3m every year to provide our services supporting local children with a shortened life expectancy and we receive no statutory government funding.

“The support from the Duchess of Cambridge is amazing for us and will help us spread the word about our work.”
