Easier access due to boost recycling at centre

Work is due to start in January to improve Halifax household waste recycling centre.

When the work is complete, the site at Lee Bank, Ovenden Road, will be much easier and safer to use, says Calderdale Council.

Sunken skips, with easy car access, will remove the need to climb steps and make it easier to unload vehicles.

There will also be a new dedicated lane, making it easier to enter and leave the site.

Private vehicles will be separated from larger waste disposal lorries to make the site safer and more efficient and there will be additional recycling facilities.

Work is scheduled to begin on the site on January 17 and is expected to be completed by late spring.

The site will be closed to householders for the duration of the work but the closure will not affect the waste transfer operations.

Calderdale Council's head of housing and environment, Mark Thompson, said some disruption was inevitable but the council was committed to high quality, safe, recycling facilities.

He said: "We've been listening to people about what they think of our recycling sites and they've told us that they would like us to make them easier to use. The beginning of January is a busy period, as people dispose of their recyclable waste straight after the Christmas holiday period.

"So we've delayed the planned start date by a week to give residents the opportunity to have a clear out and bring their recyclables down to the site."

Alternative nearby sites in Calderdale at Milner Royd, Sowerby Bridge, Atlas Mill Road, Brighouse, and Huddersfield Road, Elland, will be open as usual to take household waste.
