East Yorkshire snow: Landmark bridge shut by region's icy blasts

EAST Yorkshire's worst Arctic blast for years has continued to exert its icy grip, disrupting transport, causing misery for residents and hitting businesses hard.

Driving snow and icy roads caused the temporary closure of the Humber Bridge yesterday, while some train and bus services were suspended and flights cancelled at Humberside Airport.

Temperatures fell to minus 10C in parts of the East Riding, where drifting snow made many minor roads impassable and driving elsewhere treacherous.

Most schools and colleges were closed and are likely to remain so until the weather breaks.

Retailers in Driffield have cancelled plans to open for late night shopping tonight, one of scores of events to fall victim to the weather.

Council gritting teams have been pushed to their limits and North Lincolnshire Council has used 1,400 tonnes of salt - a quarter of its entire supply for the season.

Parts of the Wolds, the A166 and Garrowby Hill are severely affected, and workmen have been forced to dig some roads out by hand before a snow plough could be brought in.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at East Riding Council, said: "It's tough, very tough, but everybody is rising to the challenge. We know the impact it can have on things like the health service if people can't get about so we know the importance of what we are doing trying to keep the network open."
