Prof Louise Richardson said the focus of university bosses’ pay should be on the “process of deciding salaries”, rather than regulation.

She told the Commons Education Committee that universities were operating in a global marketplace when it came to hiring leaders.

Prof Richardson, who has been vice-chancellor at Oxford for two years, said: “I don’t agree that regulation is appropriate,” and added that the process at her university was “a model for the sector”.
