Eight authors in race for top award

THE shortlist for the world's richest literary prize was unveiled today with one Irish and three British authors making the grade.

The final eight in the 87,600 Impac Dublin Literary Award include Robert Edric, Zoe Heller and Ross Raisin from the UK and Ireland's Joseph O'Neill.

The books were selected from 156 novels nominated by 163 public libraries in 123 cities around the world.

Countries which took part in the poll include Ireland, Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Russia, The Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, the US and Canada.

The five-member judging panel, chaired by Eugene R Sullivan, former Chief Judge of a US Court of Appeals, will select the winner.

The result will be announced by patron of the award, Lord Mayor of Dublin Emer Costello, on June 17.
