Eight hurt as BMW ploughs into Sheffield bus stop queue

EIGHT people have been injured, four seriously, after a BMW swerved off a busy Sheffield road and into a group of pedestrians waiting at a bus stop.

At about 8.05pm last night, a silver BMW 3 series was travelling on Barnsley Road away from Sheffield city centre.

Just after the junction for Horndean Road and close to the entrance for the Northern General Hospital, it is thought that the driver lost control of the car.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “The car crossed over into the opposite lane and then mounted the pavement, colliding with a lamppost, a bus stop and eight pedestrians.

“Of the eight pedestrians, three men, aged 45, 23 and 21, and one woman, aged 23, received serious injuries including a fractured pelvis, shoulder and foot.

“The remaining four pedestrians, three women, aged 58, 38 and 24, and one man, aged 20, received minor injuries.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses who either saw the collision itself, or the manner of driving beforehand.
