Elderly driver hurt in police van collision

AN ELDERLY man is seriously ill in hospital after a collision between a police van and a car in Scunthorpe.

The 86-year-old was hurt when the black Vauxhall Agila he was driving was in collision with a marked police van travelling in the same direction along Frodingham Road at 10.06am yesterday.

The van was believed to be answering an emergency call and had its blue lights flashing.

The car driver, who has not been named, suffered broken ribs and a broken collarbone and was taken to Scunthorpe General Infirmary. His injuries were described as serious but non-life threatening.

The officer driving the van suffered shock and attended hospital with a colleague who was travelling as a passenger, but neither was physically injured.

The crash caused the closure of the road for most of the day and investigations are ongoing.
