Eleanor helps with bumper harvest

AT five she’s already a dab hand in her grandparents’ vineyard.

Eleanor Spakouskas helped out as friends, family and volunteers brought in a bumper harvest of grapes at Nun Monkton, near York.

Her grandfather Chris Spakouskas said: “Eleanor walks round with my wife and they will tie vines or cut some shoots and the next time she can do it. She just picks it up.”

The Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is on course to make over 10,000 bottles – a legacy of the fantastic summer weather – with the grapes producing 11 per cent alcohol.

Nearly all the grapes for the still wine have now been gathered in, with most of what’s left to be picked going for sparkling wine.

The UK produces more than 1.6 million bottles of white wine and almost 400,000 bottles of red wine a year.
