Electrical firm fined over old appliances

AN electrical retailer has been fined for illegally stockpiling old fridges, freezers and washing machines it collected from customers.

Trade Forward Electrical Wholesalers, which trades as Direct Discounts, pleaded guilty yesterday at Halifax Magistrates' Court to storing electrical goods at premises in Boothtown other than in accordance with an environmental permit.

It asked for a further offence, of collecting hazardous waste without notifying the Environment Agency, to be taken into account.

The company, of Trinity Business Park, Skircoat Road, Halifax, was fined 4,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of 1,850 and a victim surcharge of 15.

The court heard the company was unaware of the requirements that it must be registered with the Environment Agency, believing it was covered by their waste contractor's registration.
