BELLS will chime the hour at Sheffield Town Hall for the first time from next week.
Engineers are currently putting the finishing touches to an electronic bell ringing system at the historic Town Hall in the city centre.
Although the Town Hall clock was originally designed to be capable of working with bells they were never fitted.
As time passed the cost of installing traditional bells and carrying out necessary reinforcement works to the tower proved too expensive.
It was recently decided to install the electronic bell sound system to provide a high quality and affordable alternative.
The bells are expected to be fully operational from Monday, December 16, and will give hourly strike with Westminster-style quarter chimes.
In the meantime, shoppers will be able to hear the odd chime as the system is tested.
