Elgar £20 note to be withdrawn

Banknotes bearing the image of famous composer Sir Edward Elgar will be withdrawn from circulation at the end of June, the Bank of England said.

The composer of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches has adorned the 20 note since 1999, but the Elgar note will cease to be legal tender after June 30.

The Bank launched a new 20 note featuring 18th-century economist and Wealth ofNations author Adam Smith in 2007.
