Empty shop set to take on new role as cinema

THE stage is set for audiences to enjoy drama and blockbuster movies under plans to transform a disused furniture store into a city's new cinema and performing arts centre by early 2011.

The former Abbott's premises in North Street, Ripon, have been earmarked for the venue as part of the regeneration of the city.

Organisers of the project, called Screen 75 North, hope to provide a top-class film and arts venue benefiting local residents and the surrounding area and boosting Ripon's image among visitors.

The cinema will boast a 136-seat auditorium with digital technology, screening films and hosting a range of live productions.

There will be a multi-use stage for live music and drama – both professional and amateur – and a monthly comedy club. Ripon Improvement Partnership is backing the scheme, which also includes an in-house restaurant.

Judith Donovan, chairman of the Greater Ripon Improvement Partnership, said: "I am delighted to see such exciting and imaginative proposals which will really give Ripon that special something."
