Enchanting vision for sculptured chairs

Artists commissioned to help regenerate a Sheffield suburb have produced a series of sculptures which invite local residents including Matthew Bayliss, above, to rest and take in their surroundings.

The so-called Enchanted Chairs have been made as part of the Journey to Hidden Places project, which is concentrating on the Firth Park and Wincobank areas of the city.

According to organisers, the artworks will "breathe new life into under-used open spaces" and money has come from the council's Housing Market Renewal fund.

Among the creations, which have been installed on a site near Wincobank Avenue, is a chair which has carved angelic wings while another is formed from twisting chains which appear to hang in the air.

A spokesman from the council said: "The standard of craftsmanship in all the works is truly impressive."
