End for city's single-sex state schools signalled

EDUCATION bosses are to bring an end to single-sex state schools in Leeds with plans to close Parklands Girls' High.

Reports published last night recommended the school, in Seacroft, is shut down along with both Primrose High and City of Leeds High as part of a plan to open two new co-educational academies in the city.

Education Leeds and Leeds Council have also carried out a separate consultation which has found there is no significant demand for all-girls schools in the city.

The reports will go to Leeds Council's executive on Wednesday, April 7.

The planned closures are part of the city's response to a Government initiative which calls on local authorities to ensure all schools have at least 30 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades at GCSE.

Primrose High and City of Leeds High were falling short of this target. Parklands Girls had exceeded it in its latest GCSE results last year but has had falling pupil numbers.
