Engineering project to cut risk of sewer floods

A YORKSHIRE Water engineering scheme in West Yorkshire will help reduce the risk of properties flooding, according to the company.

Engineers are about to start a project to improve the sewerage system in Wyke, near Bradford.

“This project will significantly reduce the risk of local properties suffering sewer flooding inside their homes,” the company said.

Engineering specialists, Mott MacDonald Bentley, will start work from Monday January 7 to install a large storage pipe in the field at the back of properties on Rooks Close and Westfield Lane.

The large storage pipe which will be capable of holding 840,000 litres of storm water during wet weather will take around five months to construct.

There will be 187 meters of plastic storage pipe to lay along with 103 metres of connecting sewerage pipe.

Dominic Cunney, Yorkshire Water’s project manager, said: “This project demonstrates our commitment to playing our part to help reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the region.

“We understand the project could be disruptive to residents at times and we would like to thank them in advance for their patience whilst we carry out this important work.”

The work is part of Yorkshire Water’s £120m investment to upgrade its sewer network and treatment facilities.

The work is designed to further reduce the risk of sewer flooding which can occur when sewers become overloaded during times of heavy rainfall.
