Engineers back to tackle landslide

ENGINEERS have been carrying out further tests to discover the cause of a landslide on one of the major routes between Sheffield and Manchester.

A section of the A57 at Crosspool has been reduced to single lane traffic following the landslide, which also caused the roadside retaining wall to collapse.

Specialist geo-technical engineers from Sheffield Council’s contractor, Amey, have been “monitoring and investigating” the area.

Recent tests have revealed a collapsed drain buried deep in the hillside, which they believe could have caused the land movement.

Graeme Symonds, network director at Amey, said: “People will see a lot of activity on site in the coming days.

“We need to get a camera down into the drain so we can see exactly what is happening, where the drain has collapsed and how much of it is affected.

“This will allow us to develop the right solution to what is a very complex problem.

“Until we start the explorations, we don’t know how long it will take us to complete them – it really depends on what we find down there. It is our priority to get this moving as quickly as possible.”
