'Enhanced' schools open for special needs pupils

THE first phase of an overhaul of schooling for special needs pupils is being launched this month as part of a multi-million pound investment across North Yorkshire.

A new strategy has been drawn up by North Yorkshire County Council which will see a network of mainstream schools used as “centres of expertise” to provide additional support and outreach services.

The council has commissioned additional services from 25 schools across the county and is providing them with improved facilities and staffing to cater for pupils with some of the most challenging behaviour and special educational needs.

The first phase of the scheme is starting this term as 19 Enhanced Mainstream Schools are launched.

The county council’s executive member responsible for children with special educational needs, Coun Caroline Patmore, said: “At the heart of this provision is the belief that North Yorkshire is entitled to the very best education provision for some of the most vulnerable young people in the county.”

The enhanced schools, both primary and secondary, will form partnerships with special schools and pupil referral units, with new facilities in Northallerton and Skipton.

The scheme aims to meet the needs of children with dyslexia, high functioning autism, communication difficulties and behavioural, emotional and social needs.

It will also complement the provision already in place for children with severe learning difficulties who attend the county’s mainstream schools.

The project is part of a 5m capital investment programme which is due to be completed in the autumn to enable the enhanced mainstream schools to provide places on their roll for the most challenging pupils.

However, the strategy is aiming to ensure children continue to attend their local mainstream school wherever possible.

An extra 3m in revenue funding is being provided this year to help recruit 20 extra teachers who will be supported by additional parent support advisors and teaching assistants.
