Environment: 'Greenest government ever' pledged

David Cameron has pledged to make the coalition the "greenest government ever" and announced that all Ministerial departments must cut carbon emissions by 10 per cent.

Visiting the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), now fronted by Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne, Mr Cameron promised to place the green economy, climate change and energy security at the heart of his "agenda" for the ministry.

The new Prime Minister received polite applause from around 150 staff crammed into the department's canteen.

He said: "We've got a big, big opportunity here, I want us to be the greenest government ever.

"It's a very simple ambition and one I'm absolutely committed to achieving."

He told the assembled civil servants their agenda was "enormous and pressing".
