The bands play on to enliven proceedings

Standing between the President’s Pavilion and the main ring, showgoers will be treated to the sounds of brass and jazz as well as taken back in time to the sounds of the 20s and 30s.

On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon the Yorkshire Volunteers Band will take to the bandstand along with performing at various times during each of the three days in the main ring.

The Yorkshire Volunteers Band will also play for the closing ceremony when the outgoing president of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Raymond Twiddle hands over the staff of office to his successor, Susan Cunliffe-Lister.

Also playing at intervals throughout Tuesday on the bandstand is the Rothwell Temperance Band, based near Leeds.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Casablanca Steps performs, with the four musicians recreating the authentic musical ambience of the 1920s and 30s, as well the Sarah Brickel Jazz Band on Wednesday afternoon.

On the final day it’s the Collingham Band, a community band from near Wetherby, which will play the music to watch the show go by on Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Bill Cowling, the show director, describes the show’s music as a “great mix”.

He says: “People say they like this range of music from the jazz band to the military band to the brass band, it’s what people come to expect and it’s very much a part of the Great Yorkshire Show atmosphere.”
