Biofuels from British crops to carry Red Tractor mark

Biofuels bearing the Red Tractor mark will now be available following two years of intensive lobbying.

A spokesman for the NFU and Red Tractor Assurance said the Red Tractor Crops and Sugar Beet Scheme would ensure traceability back to UK farms.

It gained official approval from the European Commission and is now recognised across all 27 member states.

With this official status, there will be recognition from commercial operators, including German assurance schemes, to improve the export market for grain and seed generally and specifically for biofuel markets going into Germany.

Matthew Read, chairman of the Red Tractor Crops and Sugar Beet scheme, said: “We have great confidence in the quality of the Red Tractor Crops and Sugar Beet scheme which, as well as its food safety objectives, has at its heart environmental protection and traceability.

“Red Tractor standards are known and trusted in supply chains and we, alongside the NFU wanted to ensure this strength works to our members’ advantage.

“Through their membership farmers can retain access to the European market place for their crops, without the need for additional audits and form-filling for every company they trade with. We are delighted that full approval has been granted.”
