Blind taste tests to pick out region’s best

Tough decisions were being made as the first round of judging got underway in Harrogate yesterday to select the finest food and drink entries in the 2014 Taste Awards.

More than 300 submissions were received for the awards which are being run by The Yorkshire Post and deliciouslyorkshire in association with Asda to celebrate the very best food businesses and personalities in the region.

A panel of 11 judges, comprising of esteemed food journalists, discerning retail heavyweights and award winning chefs, are blind tasting 20 categories of entries across three days. Shortlisted entries will be announced early next month before the winners are revealed at an awards ceremony at the Pavilions of Harrogate on October 15.

The bakery, fresh meat, cheese, sweet preserve and ice cream categories came under the scrutiny yesterday of Tim Bilton, chef at The Spiced Pear restaurant in Hepworth, Justin Brosenitz, co-owner of The Star in the City restaurant in York, Steve Dunkley, the regional manager of Eblex, and The Yorkshire Post’s very own associate feature editor Catherine Scott.

Jo Satariano, membership, marketing and media manager for deliciouslyorkshire, said award organisers were delighted with the quality of entries.

“There is a really high standard in all the categories that have been judged so far.

“We are seeing a lot of innovation and a great variation of entries this year.”
