Champion debut at birthday Texel sale

NORTH Yorkshire farmer Philip Makin, a newcomer to the Northern Area Texel Breeders Association, made a good debut at their 30th anniversary show and sale of pedigree rams and females at Skipton.

Mr Makin, of Chop Gate, Bilsdale, produced the champion animal of the event on September 15-16 –- a shearling ram born March 2010 and already honoured at Driffield and Ryedale shows this summer.

The young ram sold for 1,500gns to John Mellin of Mill House, Long Preston.

But top price in show was 4,100 guineas paid by another John Mellin, of Hull House Texels at Hellifield, for a 19-month-old shearling ewe from Stuart Currie’s Beautry flock at Rathmell.
