Surgeon Sam Burnell and her team nursed Stitch back to life by dressing her wounds every day during two months of intensive care and treatment.

Ms Burnell said: “Stitch was in a terrible state when she was brought into the practice as she had a terrible wound down to her skull, which had become infected.

“Her ear had also been sliced off.

“It was touch and go whether we could save her and we thought she might have to be put to sleep

“But, despite her terrible injuries, he was still very bright so it was worth trying to save her.”

Unfortunately, although Stitch has made a full recovery, the extent of her injuries mean she will never be able to be released back into the wild and will instead go to live in a secure garden for wildlife.

Ms Burnell said the animal had melted everyone’s heart.

She said: “Because she has no spikes on her head and an ear missing, she will be released to a secure garden, which will provide a protective environment for her.

“Everyone fell in love with her because she is so cute and we’re delighted she has recovered.”
