The new 300 tonne structure, which stretches across the River Eamont in Pooley Bridge, Cumbria, took three hours to be put in place by a huge mobile crane.

Its 251-year-old stone predecessor was washed away by Storm Desmond in 2015.

Miles MacInnes, Chair of Barton and Pooley Bridge Parish Council, said: “Pooley Bridge has come in for a battering since 2015: from having no bridge to now Covid-19.

“Here’s to the bridge and the village’s vibrant future – we can’t wait to share her with you once it is safe and sensible to do so.”

Work will continue on the bridge to complete the upper road deck in the coming months.
