Dales creamery butters up supermarkets for sales

WENSLEYDALE Creamery, the dairy which saved Wallace & Gromit’s favourite cheese, has announced the launch of “Dales Butter”.

The creamery last produced butter in the 1980s.

But its revelation of the year at the Great Yorkshire Show was that it would be meeting “customer demand for a regional option”.

It said: “The premium product, made from fresh Wensleydale cream, will be churned into a smooth and creamy butter and wrapped in stylish black packaging, providing Yorkshire customers with a quality premium butter.”

First samples were on offer at the show yesterday. The butter will now be sold through the visitor centre at the creamery and independent shops, while the company looks for supermarket deals.

Managing director David Hartley said: “We have had constant calls for the return of our regional butter.

“In a year to celebrate all things British, we are excited to cement the company’s heritage and provenance by adding a new addition to the Wensleydale family.”

The Wensleydale Creamery has gone from strength to strength since a management buy-out averted closure in 1992. It now employs more than 200 people across two manufacturing sites, as well as supporting local dairy farmers.
