Delight as goat honoured by Prince of Wales

A GOAT has received the Royal seal of approval as part of new quality assurance awards.

Lyncol Betemba was one of four winners of the inaugural Prince of Wales Award for Outstanding Quality, which are exclusive to the Great Yorkshire Show.

Prince Charles, the patron of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, has given his name to the new awards which allow recipients to display a specially-designed logo on their product.

The award-winning doe, which was honoured for the best milk from an individual goat, is owned by Colin Newton and Paul Mounter, based in Durham.

The two men, who own 15 goats between them, said they were “over the moon”. Mr Mounter, a feed merchant by trade, said: “Hopefully commercial people will see this and want to buy our stock to improve their own.”

The new quality awards cover all dairy products, and the winners announced yesterday also included Ryeburn of Helmsley for its ice cream, Singleton’s Dairy in Preston for its specialist cheese, and Quickes in Devon, also for its speciality cheese.
