Farmers sign up to supply fuel plant

MORE than 500 farmers have signed up to supply a new multi-million-pound biofuels plant in Yorkshire.

Frontier Agriculture, the company in charge of supplying the £200m Vivergo plant, at Saltend, in Hull, has revealed that it has signed the farmers to the ‘Humber Gold wheat club’ in the first few weeks since its launch.

The Hull-based plant is set to become the largest buyer of grain in the whole of the country and hopes to buy the one million tonnes of wheat it needs each year from Yorkshire.

The site, a joint venture between DuPont, BP and British Sugar, will use crops to produce biofuels for use in transport.

Bosses believe that the 13-hectare site will be able to supply a significant proportion of the country’s bioethanol requirements.

The first fuels are expected to expected to start production in the next few months.

Mike Ayers, Humber Gold club manager, said: “With more than 500 farmers on board, and more calling us to sign every day, we’ll be ready to supply the 130 lorryloads of grain that’s required daily when production begins.
