Fire crews fight to control blaze at waste depot

FIREFIGHTERS expect to remain battling a blaze at a North Yorkshire waste depot into today.

Around 60 firefighters tackled the massive blaze at the Todd Waste Management site on Thirsk Industrial Park on Tuesday evening. The cause is still being investigated.

Jonathan Foster, group manager at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said last night the fire, which at its height could be reportedly seen 25 miles away in Harrogate and led to warnings to residents to stay in their homes, was still being brought under control.

“We have around five appliances that are going to be damping down at the scene overnight and into Thursday,” he said.

“There has been no hazardous waste involved in the fire. There are parts of the building which were involved which have become unstable or unsafe.”
