Former dairy farmer, 75, honoured

The annual award from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution was presented to John Gullett, 75. He was presented with the accolade by the society’s president, Raymond Twiddle and Julian Sayers, RABI chairman.

Now retired and living at Shelf near Halifax, Mr Gullett originally farmed on the edge of Bradford and also ran a milk round. He was involved with the NFU’s milk and legal committees. Mr Gullett had a challenging role during the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak when he assisted the Veterinary Office at Lawnswood, Leeds.

Richard Ellison, the NFU’s former regional director for Yorkshire, said: “John is not one for self promotion which perhaps explains why his contribution to the farming community in West Yorkshire over many years is not more widely known. However there are many who have reason to be grateful for his calm and level headed advice and for his work on the industry’s behalf.”
