Four out of five Yorkshire rivers fall foul of new eco inspections

The Water Framework Directive has five levels of classification ranging from bad – which signifies a “severe change from natural conditions” – to high, “a pristine environment”. No rivers in Yorkshire have been given the top rating, with just 961km judged “good”.

By far the largest number of watercourses out of the 6,559km that have been assessed are classed as “moderate”.
