How wet will it get at Great Yorkshire showground?

THE Met Office did its ambiguous best to put a positive spin on the weather for the opening day of the Great Yorkshire Show. It would rain, it said, but then brighten - though showers would continue.

They were half right. A morning of continuous, steady rain was right on message, but a break in the clouds had, by lunchtime, failed to materialise.

The forecast yesterday had predicted none of it, and many visitors had doubtless looked forward to, at worst, a day of sunshine and showers.

As it was, the show got off to one of the wettest starts in recent memory. Even the 2012 show, which was abandoned after the first day, had seen a bit of sunshine.

Conditions this year are much better, and before today’s rain the grass was firm and springy. The expected dry spell tomorrow will return it to normal.

In the meantime, umbrellas and plastic covers on pushchairs were the order of the day as visitors picked their way between the pavilions. Unofficial estimates say attendance is down so far this year, but the best is yet to come.
