International success for exotic flavours of a salad from the East

An East Yorkshire salad producer is celebrating international recognition by industry peers at a showcase of fresh produce in Berlin.

Husband and wife team Andrew and Anna Johnson started Home Harvest Salads Ltd in Brough ten years ago. Their Living Salads range are grown from seed in 20 acres of greenhouses and are supplied to Asda, Booths, the Co-Operative, Lidl, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s.

Living Salads are sold as trays of growing baby leaves that shoppers can keep on a windowsill and harvest the leaves when they need them. They last up to ten days with only light daily watering required.

Their latest product, a spicy Oriental Mixed Living Salad landed praise in Germany, being named as runner-up for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award at what is regarded as the leading annual exhibition for the international fresh produce trade.

Although pipped to the top prize by Swiss vegetable mix firm Eisberg, the Johnsons are taking great encouragement from coming second as the award is voted for by 58,000 trade professionals from 130 countries.

Mrs Johnson said: “It’s very exciting to see our Oriental Mixed Living Salad take second place for this prestigious award, especially as ours is the only UK-produced innovation on the shortlist. It recognises and rewards ten years of great progress and hard work.”

The Oriental salad consists of coriander, mustard, tatsoi and pak choi, and is attracting interest from retailers across continental Europe.
