It’s a TV Mayday Mayday for crew of Humber Lifeboat

Humber Lifeboat crew will make an appearance in a new primetime TV programme next week.

The crew will appear on ITV’s Mayday Mayday which shines the spotlight on RNLI lifeboatmen and women and conditions they have to face, using footage captured by helmet cameras and onboard the lifeboat.

The emergency callout featured on next Tuesday’s show involves a sick passenger and his wife being evacuated from the Pride of Bruges ferry.

Humber RNLI Superintendent Coxswain Dave Steenvoorden said: “They may not be the types of sea rescue the public normally associates with the RNLI but evacuating seriously ill people from vessels is a key lifesaving task.

“Hopefully viewers will see the compassionate side of lifeboatmen as this incident unfolds on the screen.

“I’ve really enjoyed the episodes of Mayday Mayday I’ve seen so far. It shows the action from a lifeboatman’s point of view and gives the audience quite a unique impression of rescues as they happen.

“TV coverage like this is fantastic for the RNLI because we have to show people the vital service we provide and help them understand why we must carry on raising the charitable funds to pay for it.”

Although the RNLI has featured on many different TV programmes, it is the first time a full series has been commissioned which concentrates solely on the lifesaving work of RNLI volunteers.

The eight-part series is presented by Irish television and radio presenter Craig Doyle, known for his hosting of the popular travel programme Holiday.
