Landscape grant scheme planned to maintain the fabric of national park

THE historic boundaries of fields in the North York Moors National Park are set to benefit from a planned new landscape grant scheme.

Andy Wilson, chief executive, said in its forward plan that such boundaries as dry stone walls would qualify for aid, and it is also planned to improve the quality of the park’s scores of villages through grant aid and advice.

In addition, said Mr Wilson, the park’s business plan to 2015 aims to develop an agricultural skills project to help businesses deliver more sustainable and efficient production. “We aim to encourage more uptake of agri-environment schemes and continue the park authority’s apprenticeship scheme.”

Currently, he added, the park now has 17 apprentices – 15 per cent of its workforce. “If the whole of the public sector had as many apprenticeships, virtually every young unemployed person in the country could be offered a job.”

Other schemes on the drawing board include developing community forums to discuss land management and business and tourism interests to aid the park’s economy.
