New bridge means no more washout woes for the Great Yorkshire Show

organisers of the 2013 Great Yorkshire Show are hoping this new bridge will quell previously troubled waters – and help the event return with a bang after last year’s washout.

The new structure was craned into position yesterday in readiness for the three-day agricultural extravaganza, which opens on Tuesday, July 9. The 15-metre long and five-metre wide bridge is part of a £500,000 improvement plan for the Harrogate showground.

It was placed on its footings across the Crimple Beck at the south side of the site in Harrogate to provide a link between new car parking areas and the existing showground.

Around 130,000 visitors from across the UK and beyond are expected.

Last year, the final two days of the three-day event had to be cancelled after wet weather resulted in the car parks becoming unusable quagmires.

The bridge will be in place for the next 12 weeks and Nigel Pulling, chief executive, was on hand to see it being put into position.

He said: “Following last year’s unprecedented rainfall, our aim is to weatherproof the show as far as we can, and the bridge is part of the plan. This gives us greater flexibility of land we can use. We have also created more internal roads within the parking areas and substantially extended and improved the drainage.”
