New video: Great Yorkshire Show opens in Harrogate

Royal attention falls on the farming world in Harrogate this week as the 156th instalment of an event billed as England’s premier agricultural show draws around 135,000 people to the spa town.

The Great Yorkshire Show opens today at the showground off Railway Road with the Yorkshire Agricultural Society welcoming The Countess of Wessex today, followed by the Princess Royal tomorrow.

The three-day event showcases the best livestock from across the region and beyond, and cattle and sheep entries are at record levels this year.

Alongside the animal classes, there will be a plethora of other diversions for visitors such as a country pursuits zone, a display of agricultural machinery and motors, equine competitions and a lifestyle and food area.

The showground was busy yesterday as trade stand holders made last minute adjustments and farmers prepared their beasts for judging.

Bill Cowling, the show’s honorary director, said advance ticket sales had been strong and the show had all the makings of being the perfect occasion. “I hope that our visitors enjoy the show and, as well as that, I hope that they learn something from it because part of any event like this is for the agricultural community to show visitors and our friends what we are doing and why we are doing it.”
