North Yorkshire Show’s future now secured for years says secretary

Last year’s cancellation cost the committee £43,000 in refunds and as a result doubt surrounded the show’s future.

Mr Andrew said: “The turnout has secured the future of the show. We nearly lost the show last year but today’s success has put us back on a firm financial footing – the people who have come through the gates have seen to that.”

Final attendance figures are expected to confirm that visitor numbers were in the region of 10,000.

Brompton farmer Ralph Pattison, who is joint show president with his wife Jennifer, has been involved in 46 shows.

“It’s been absolutely excellent,” he said. “This one is right at the top of list of shows I’ve been a part of.”

After 14 years on the organising committee, chief steward and head of the sheep section, Martin Brown, is bowing out.

He said: “Considering the weather sheep farmers have faced over the last 12 months it’s a tremendous field of entries so great credit to all those who exhibited.

“I would like to thank all the stewards and people who have helped me over the last 14 years and my wife Val for all her help,” he said.

A fundraising campaign and a successful application to the Big Lottery Fund which awarded the committee £10,000 have helped to overcome last year’s financial difficulties.
