Public hero farmer to be lauded

Outstanding candidates who demonstrate their commitment to educating the public about what they do are being considered to be named our Farmer of the Year 2015.

To be in with a chance of winning, farmers are asked to explain, in up to 500 words, how they interact with the public.

An industry panel of judges will consider all the entries after the closing date on Friday, June 12 and the inaugural award will be presented to the winning farmer at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate which takes place on July 14-16.

The award is sponsored by Andersons, the farm business consultants based in Easingwold.

David Wadsworth, consultant at Andersons, said: “Farmers work tirelessly to feed the nation and their operations contribute a huge amount to both this region’s and the country’s economy.

“That job alone is no easy one. Stringent regulation, volatile prices and unreliable weather are all a challenge. Yet there are many farmers here in Yorkshire who go beyond the call of duty.

“Through countless ways, farmers are now interacting with the public like never before. Fuelled by a need to diversify, farmers are now very much out facing and welcome people onto their land to better understand the journey from food to fork.
