Record levels of litter cleared off UK beaches

AN UNOPENED pack of bacon, half a TV and a French bullet-proof vest were among more than 223,000 items of litter cleared from beaches during an annual clean-up.

The Marine Conservation Society said they’d found record levels of litter during their annual Beachwatch weekend, with the top find being tiny pieces of plastic, which have probably been swilling round in the ocean for years getting smaller and smaller.

Spokeswoman Lauren Eyles said: “Plastic is a real issue for our oceans and beaches.

“This year we also picked up lots of lids and caps. However, despite it being a really warm summer, we saw less crisp, sweets and lolly wrappers and fewer plastic bottles.”
