If you would like to learn more about drystone walling there’s a practical demonstration at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes next Tuesday, April 10, from 2pm to 4pm.

In the Dales, limestone walls are the norm.
Southern parts of Yorkshire feature mostly sandstone and gritstone walls.
In Cumbria and Wales they use slate and in Scotland they build single skin walls using large blocks of granite.
In Cornwall they have a tradition of building in herringbone fashion.
