A wide range of pressing issues will be discussed, from struggling exports and inconsistent support from major retailers, to animal health and welfare concerns and longstanding supply chain issues such as the lack of a standard dressing spec for lamb.

The one-day Northern Beef and Sheep Conference has been organised by the National Farmers’ Union in collaboration with AHDB Beef & Lamb to support the livestock industry in the face of falling farm gate prices and market pressures.

Richard Findlay, the NFU’s regional livestock board chairman, said: “To make sure farmers are in the best position to respond positively to these challenges, build business resilience and remain competitive we need to understand in detail how our domestic and export markets are shaping up, what consumers really want, how retailers are living up to their commitments and how the industry itself is responding in terms of innovation and promotion.

“All this and more will be discussed at our flagship conference that aims to bring together a wealth of beef and lamb producers from across the North.”

The line-up of speakers includes the NFU’s deputy president and livestock producer Minette Batters, the union’s national livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe, chairman of the AHDB Beef & Lamb board Adam Quinney and AHDB’s strategy director for beef and lamb Laura Ryan.

The conference takes place at Scotch Corner Hotel on Tuesday, January 12, 10am-3.30pm.
