Tesco accused of poor show on British lamb

Tesco has been criticised for stocking too little British lamb.

Eblex, the organisation for the English beef and sheep industry, found that just 55 per cent of fresh lamb products on sale at the supermarket during August were British.

Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers’ Union, said: “In July, I called upon all retailers to celebrate British lamb as ‘best in season’, putting it front and centre of their displays and really getting behind our sheep farmers.

“It’s great that most appear to be taking that message on board, including Tesco, which has invested in national advertising of UK lamb. However, the results of this survey show there is still an enormous amount of work to do within Tesco to increase their British sourcing.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “We are British agriculture’s biggest customer and we are confident that we source more British lamb than any other UK retailer.

“As British lamb is in season, we currently offer our customers 100 per cent British lamb on our counters and in our Finest range.

“We have also been celebrating British lamb through our Love Every Mouthful campaign, which is supported by advertising, displays in store and promotions on British leg and shoulder joints and chops.”

On Wednesday, Tesco apologised to a home delivery customer in Cumbria after it responded to a complaint by wrongly stating that British lamb was “not in season”.
