Mr Brown, who has climbed all seven of the world’s highest peaks, said his first encounter with the show was when hands on his farm at Baldersby, near Thirsk, would not work on a Monday in the potato-picking season when he had six lorries booked and a huge order from McCain’s to meet – because it was the day of Nidderdale Show.

Once he attended himself, he said, he understood.

John Fawcett, previous president of the show and a committee member for over 40 years, was presented with a lifetime member’s badge. Special thanks were also given to Sue Monk, show secretary for the past 17 years.

GOAT farmer and cheesemaker Stephen Akrigg, pictured, is the focus of a video diary of preparations for the Great Yorkshire Show.

Mr Akrigg keeps around 150 cross-breed goats at Yellison Farm, Carlton, near Skipton, and is a regular competitor in the Cheese and Dairy Section of the show, which has grown into one of the biggest of its kind.
