The announcement came at 9.30 this morning as car parks not closed by the recent flooding rapidly filled up.

Organisers have made arrangements for a new park-and-ride scheme, 1.5 miles from the showground at Plompton Bar, from which a continuous loop of free buses will transport visitors to and from the showground.

There will also be an increase in free shuttle buses from Harrogate Station, a new internal road to assist car park access, stones put in place in front of gateways and tracks laid to the car parks which are open.

But this morning organisers urged visitors not already en route not to set off.

A final inspection of the showground saw the show given the go ahead, although visitors would be wise to bring waterproof walking boots or Wellington boots.

Chief executive Nigel Pulling said: “The showground is in reasonable condition; we have about seven miles of roads and plenty of permanent buildings, and the ground itself is holding up well.

“We are delighted that the show will go ahead, especially after the deluge of the last few days, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole team here.

“We have a great programme of events over the next three days and we look forward to welcoming visitors.”

Organisers have been laying miscanthus, a green energy crop usually burned in power stations, on muddy spots around the site to make the ground passable.
