More than 7,500 people voted for a total of 600 different pubs for the accolade, ran by tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire in association with the Yorkshire Post.

Christine Cullen and her colleague picked up the trophy alongside her colleague Kevin Laint in front of a crowd of more than a hundred inside the Welcome to Yorkshire tent,

“We must have the kindest and most loyal customers in Yorkshire - the best there is,” she said.

“We are just beside our self, we definitely will be having a few celebratory drinks tonight.

“We are absolutely on top of the world.”

Ms Cullen took over the pub in October 2010 after the previous owners were liquidated.

“We are really grateful to everyone who voted for us. It has made all of the hard work worthwhile.”

The White Horse Farm Inn, on Chimney Bank, has a loyal customer base from the surrounding area but also does a strong trade with walkers and cyclists.

As well as the traditional hand-pulled ales and fine malt whiskys it serve, it also supplies food and has 11 guest rooms.

The extensive menu specialises in local game, fish, and organic meats. All meals are cooked to order and a wide variety of vegetarian options and are able to cater for any special dietary needs upon request.

The a trip to Historic York will only take one hour by car and Yorkshire’s Heritage Coast is a mere 19 miles away.

Ms Cullen said that the secret to a good pub was not something that could be easily pinned down but said that hard work was largely part of the success.

“You just cannot give up.

“It doesn’t matter to us if there has been six foot of snow on the ground we will battle and keep trying and just get our heads down.

“We know if we give a good service then people will continue to come back.

“There has been a lot of hard work but this certainly has made that work worth the effort, the trophy will take pride of place behind the bar.”

The White Horse Farm Inn, came in ahead of the recently-revamped Town Hall Tavern in Leeds which took second place, and the Durham Ox at Crayke, near York which came in third.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, told those who gathered to see the award ceremony: “We have the most fantastic pub and brewing industry and country here in Yorkshire.

“We have Timothy Taylors, Black Sheep and Theakstons all on our patch.”

The best 30 pubs will be listed in a special Ale Trail guide which Welcome to Yorkshire will publish in the coming weeks.

Voters initially nominated a pub each which judges then whittled down to a shortlist.

Voters were then given the chance to vote their favourite from this shortlist to determine the winner.
