Waiting list beefed up for county’s prime livestock show

Livestock entries are one again up for this month’s Countryside Live event, with interest greater than ever before – and farmers queuing up to take part.

Increases have been seen in both the cattle and sheep numbers with cattle entries now totalling 193 – compared with last year’s figure of 183 – and sheep figures have increased to 274 as against last year’s number of 252.

Organisers have also revealed a further twist for the 2011 event with the confirmation that livestock judging will this year be carried out by Phil Sellers, known to most as the farmer who has won the supreme beef category for the past three years.

Honorary show director Bill Cowling said: “Countryside Live is increasingly seen as a first class primestock show.

“We are absolutely full as far as the cattle are concerned, and have a waiting list of 40.

“With the sheep, it’s hard to think where we could accommodate their tack if we were to try to squeeze in more entries.

“It’s a nice problem to have, and indicative of the high esteem in which the show is held.”

The event – which last year attracted more than 10,000 visitors – is organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society who run the Great Yorkshire Show.

This year’s event will take place on October 22 and 23 at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.
