Warning of increase in the cost of grass seed

GRASS seed will cost more in 2012, says DLF Trifolium, the UK’s largest supplier.

But agricultural sales director Tim Kerridge said this week: “A £20 rise in the cost of an acre of grass seed adds just 82p to the cost of producing one tonne of grass dry matter.

“However a 20 per cent fall in grass yield could reduce milk output from grass by more than 50 per cent.”

Masstock agronomist Sam Patchett, who covers a wide patch from his home base at Eastrington, near Howden, was in the top six of 241 entrants who qualified for the BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection in 2011.

They were invited to a ceremony at the Farmers Club in London, as finalists for the Barrie Orme Trophy, presented by the Agricultural Industries Confederation.

But the eventual winner was James Mayes, a farm manager in Bedfordshire.
