The orange snake - nicknamed Sammy - was spotted slithering along the path on Holgate Road, York, yesterday by a member of the public, who called police.

Officers attended and found the corn snake taking refuge in a nearby hedge.

Corn snakes are popular pet snakes and are said to be docile and reluctant to bite.

They subdue their prey - mice and rats - by constriction but lack venom.
