Yorkshire weather: Warning for gardeners as overnight frosts to return

The Met Office is predicting that things will get chillier over the next few days - and temperatures could even drop below freezing at night.

The recent sunnier weather has coaxed people out and into their gardens as April quickly approaches.

But those with green-fingers will want to make sure to protect their more-delicate plants over the next week as temperatures are forecast to be below average for this time of year.

Today:

A cloudy day with rain across the Pennines, persistent and heavy at times. Further east it will be drier with some bright periods developing, as well as the odd shower. Remaining windy and very mild. Maximum temperature 14C.

Tonight:

Turning drier everywhere with clear spells developing. After midnight cloud will thicken in the west with rain at times. Staying windy. Minimum temperature 3C.

Monday:

Early cloud and rain giving way to scattered showers, wintry over highest ground and a strong northwesterly wind. This will herald the arrival of much lower temperatures than of late. Maximum temperature 9C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Temperatures below average for the time of year with widespread overnight frosts. Isolated showers at times, wintry over high ground, and possibly at lower levels. Some drier brighter interludes also.
